Guyana’s premier secondary school, Queens College is celebrating its performance at the CXC  Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate and Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examinations.

At the CSEC level, 98.77% of the students who wrote the 2014 examinations gained Grade One to Three passes. QC was closely followed by the Bishop’s High School which gained an overall pass rate of 98.7% and St. Joseph’s High with its 96.22% pass rate.

The Top Performing student in the country is Elisa Hamilton of Queen’s College who gained 19 Grade Ones and 1 Grade Two. Locked in the number 2 spot are Bharti Bhoge of Skeldon Line Path Secondary and Larissa Whiltshire of Queens College who both gained 17 Grade Ones.

Queens College dominated the Top Performer’s list in the country by producing 50 of the Top 192 students.

13,724 students wrote the CSEC examinations across Guyana. Of that figure, 8642 were from the public school system while 5,082 were from the private school system.

According to Education Minister, Priya Manickchand, the overall pass rate at the General and Technical proficiencies for Grade One to Three this year is 60.21% which represents a very marginal increase over last year’s 59.31%.

Mathematics and English Language remain two of the subjects that continue to deliver unsatisfactory results.

38.7% of the students who wrote CSEC Mathematics gained Grade One to Three passes. Though the figure remains far under the 50% mark, it also represents a better performance when compared to the 2013 figures. Last year, just 28.92% of the students who wrote CSEC Mathematics gained Grade One to Three passes.

English Language continued under the 50% overall pass rate mark but the 46.98% in passes this year is an increase over the 45.69% from the 2013 examinations.

The Education Minister said although there is need to do more and for better results to be attained in the two main subject areas, the increase in the performance in the two subject areas ought to be recognised even though the 50% halfway mark is still to be attained. She announced the launch of a new literacy programme for the new school year which begins in September.

Manickchand said the successful children, their teachers and parents ought to be congratulated for the outstanding performance and support.

She noted that her Ministry intends to focus more on several subject areas to attract better results.

Meanwhile, at the CAPE level Cecil Cox and Deowattie Narine who both attended Queens College,  gained the top spots with seven grade one passes at the Advanced Level.
