Ramotar promises $20 Billion investment in sugar once re-elected

President Donald Ramotar and his People’s Progressive Party travelled to the heartland of the Guyana sugar industry on Sunday and rolled out new promises for the problem prone industry.

At the PPP Civic’s rally at Albion, Berbice, Mr, Ramotar said once he is re-elected to office, he will ensure his government makes a whopping $20 Billion investment in the sugar industry over five years.

He said “I am committing that when we win the elections on May 11, we will invest a minimum of $20 billion over the next five years to ensure that the industry survives…I have every reason to believe that the best days of sugar is still ahead of it, (and) that it has tremendous contributions to make.”

The sugar industry has been facing serious decline in its production rate over the year.

The investment in the Skeldon sugar factory did not result in the benefits the government was expecting. Over the years, the sugar sector has been enjoying a hefty bite of the national budget although global markets have been dwindling and production targets have not been met.

The PPP has been reaching out more to its base across the Berbice area which depends heavily on the sugar industry. On Sunday, thousands of party supporters gathered in Albion to hear of the plans of the party. Mr. Ramotar told the gathering that history is at the doorsteps of the PPP.

“We are on the eve of making history. On May 11, our country will go to the poll, and we want to record the biggest victory ever for the PPP/C, and we have every reason to expect that we will have a massive victory because we stand on a very proud record. Our party fought from the very beginning for the welfare of the people…and now in government we have a very good record and you the people have achieved the most under the PPP/C in Government,” he said.

The President outlined several new initiatives that he hopes will see the development of the Berbice region and which might encourage his supporters to vote solidly for him on May 11.

“We want to create a special development fund for Regions Two and Six to ensure we provide employment for the very brilliant students leaving school now…we will build in this region a cultural centre”.

While Ramotar and his running mate, Elisabeth Harper focused their presentations on how they intend to improve life for residents of Berbice, PPP Civic Candidates Bharrat Jagdeo and Clement Rohee focused much of their attention on what has been described as “fear mongering”.  Party supporters were told that should the APNU+AFC coalition win the next elections, Guyana could become a military state because of David Granger’s past career in the Guyana Defence Force.

Albion residents were told to be protective of their votes and to ensure they head to the polls and vote.

Rohee told the residents that “allyu doan stay home and seh ah we done win ah ready”. He also warned his party supporters against “rum drinking” on election’s eve and elections day.
