Rohee not convinced fight against crime being won by Law Enforcement

PPP General Secretary and Former Home Affairs Minister Clement Rohee on Monday refused to accept President David Granger’s assurance that the war on crime is being won by law enforcement.

At his weekly press conference as General Secretary of the opposition People’s Progressive Party, Rohee challenged the President’s declaration and in turn said his own assessment has revealed a very “troubling situation.”

Last week Mr. Granger gave a strong indication of his satisfaction with the manner in which law enforcement agencies have been stepping up the fight against criminals in recent months, pointing to the number of cases being solved and arrests being made.

But Mr. Rohee said these assurances will do little to persuade citizens who continue to come face to face with crime and criminals on a daily basis.

“I don’t think anyone will believe that crime is under control… it’s a very troubling situation,” Rohee told reporters.

He said “I don’t expect Granger to say anything different. As Opposition Leader he had all the solutions. I don’t expect him to say it is out of control,” the former Minister said in disagreement.

Rohee further lamented that should the President speak the truth about what is really happening in the country it will only serve to make him “look bad.”

“He is not going to say Ramjattan is failing or the Commissioner of Police is failing because he will look bad so he will big them up,” he added.

The President had acknowledged, what he said was an inherited tradition of disorder from the former People’s Progressive Party government in which Rohee served.

Rohee offered no new recommendations for the government in its quest to arrest the crime situation.

He would only say that several recommendations were made by himself and former President Donald Ramotar in 2014 which the law enforcement agencies are yet to take onboard.

The government is already claiming success with the almost two months old joint service “Operation Dragnet” which has resulted in high-profile interdictions across the country and the gunning down of armed bandits.

Over the past few weeks, the Guyana Police Force has been stepping up its investigation abilities with support from the Government and a number of international partners and reports a strengthening of its Criminal Investigation Department.  (Kurt Campbell)
