Roopnarine declares PPP blocking national unity in Guyana; calls on youths to stand up and vote

The message of national unity and reconciliation was taken to Region Two on Saturday as the APNU+AFC coalition hosted its unity rally in the town of  Anna Regina where residents were urged to join in the efforts to unseat the incumbent People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) from its 23 years rule.

APNU Member Dr. Rupert Roopnarine regarded the efforts to forge a government of national unity as a “revolution” which he said will be fought and won on May 11 when Guyanese head to the polls to elect a new government.
He reminded of the cries sounded throughout the country in 2011 when many Guyanese had rejected President Donald Ramotar and expressed fears that Guyana under his leadership will be “an absurdity”.

“Well after the 2011 elections absurdity ascended the throne. For the last four years Guyanese have been ruled by King Donald the absurd,” Roopnarine declared.

He called on his fellow country men and women to join in the voter revolution against “larceny in high places, corruption and impoverishment”. Roopnarine told the large gathering that the PPP/C has reduced Guyana to a condition that is unimaginable deprived.

Roopnarines who also heads the Working People’s Alliance promised that there will be a rebuilding for Guyana under an APNU+AFC government, noting that the coalition aims to free Guyanese from the scourge of unemployment, poverty, disease and illness.

Essequibo residents were also urged to pay tribute at the polls to late political activist Courtney Crum-Ewing who was shot dead while campaigning in Diamond.

“We will avenge that  murder by doing what he urged us to do… come out and vote.” According to Dr. Roopnarine, even after the ballot is cast, efforts must be made to protect each ballot box and each polling place, since according to him, the ruling party appears “desperate” and willing to do anything possible to stay in power.

The PPP/C, Roopnarine said,  is presently the greatest obstacle to national unity in Guyana and said this is precisely why the voter revolution on May 11 must succeed.

“They are not interested in love and unity, they are interested in one party rule and dictatorship… this is why we must leave them behind,” he added. Roopnarine repeated earlier statements by his party’s leadership that the next government of Guyana must be one of national unity which believes and practices “inclusionary democracy”.

He said the coalition remains willing to include the few “good and decent” persons in the PPP/C to join the APNU+AFC in the new government which will embark on a process of healing and reconciliation.

Roopnarine covered several themes and topics throughout his passionate speech which was well received. Touching on the issue of youth development, he said the coalition government will place youth at the center of its development plan with the aim to stave off migration while at the same time ensuring that Guyanese earn enough so that they could live decent lives. The rally was reminded that to do this, they will need the removal of the PPP/C from
office. “let’s make May 11 be the day of reckoning… we are the many, they are the few.”
