Royston King ready to restructure City Hall as new Town Clerk

Newly appointed Town Clerk of the City of Georgetown, Royston King has accepted the position with much enthusiasm and is already promising to “rethink, re-train, retool and reorganize” the internal operations of the Georgetown Mayor and City Council (M&CC) in order to deliver a better quality of service to city residents.

King told News Source that he sees his new role in the Council as being essential to delivering a city that is clean, healthy, efficient, and economically viable.

He had applied for the position since 2011 but only received his substantial confirmation on Monday, July 13 from Minister of Communities, Ronald Bulkan.

While serving as the Public Relations Officer for the Council, he had several clashes with former Town Clerk Carol Sooba over the post.

Sooba’s appointment under the previous government was seen as a political one and her service has since been terminated by the Minister.

King has set his criticism aside and has explained that he plans to work on internal integration to have all departments work in tandem to deliver a higher quality of service. The new Town Clerk acknowledges the chain of complaints directly linked to the Council’s poor management of the city, particularly the solid waste management.

He said there is need to build the Council’s capacity to guarantee “external adaptation” which will see the Council becoming more aware and responding more efficiently to the dynamics of the city environment and the self needs of citizens

“I believe the way we will be able to do this is through building strong partnership with all stakeholders. I believe we need to have an approach where we have movement from bottom up rather than the other way around,” he said.

Mr. King has more than 25 years of service with the Mayor and City Council. He was first employed by the Council as an Environmental Health Officer with the Council’s Public Health Department. Later, he moved up to the post of Press Officer, and the City’s Public Relations Officer.

King was appointed on several occasions by the Council as Town Clerk but those decisions were reversed by the former Ministers of Local Government under the People’s Progressive Party administration. He has a Masters degree in Corporate Communication and is currently pursuing a PhD. in Leadership, Corporate Governance and Policy.
