Santa in Parliament was prank and not breach of security -Police

One week after Santa came to town and made a stop in the National Assembly, the Guyana Police Force has broken its silence on the issue.

There were rumblings among some Members of Parliament that the presence of someone dressed in a Santa Claus outfit walking into the National Assembly Chamber was a breach of security.

Today that was shot shot down by the Police. In a statement from the Guyana Police Force, Police Commissioner (ag) David Ramnarine said there is no deteriorating security situation at Parliament.

With regard to Santa, Mr Ramnarine said it should be noted that there cannot be a security breach when an entry in whatever shape or form is authorized.

“It is my view, after making the requisite enquiries, that this was no more than just a prank”, he said.

It is believed that the person who was dressed in the Santa Claus outfit may have arrived in Parliament building dressed in ordinary clothes and used the washroom to change over to the costume.

Santa walked into Parliament during the speech of the Opposition Leader, leaving the Speaker and Parliamentary staff puzzled and members chuckling with laughter.

The person was immediately removed from the Chamber and led out of the compound. It is unclear whether Santa boarded his sleigh once out of the Parliament.

As if Santa’s appearance was not enough, on Thursday just as the Speaker was adjourning one of the sessions, a woman in the public gallery started to sing “God is watching us”.  She was forced to stop as the Speaker watched at her and interjected.

Just like Santa, she too was led out of the building.

In response to that singing appearance, the Police Commissioner said  that incident was really nothing near to a security breach, as the woman in question was permitted to enter the Public Viewing Gallery by security officials of Parliament Office Security.

“The Guyana Police Force in collaboration with its Senior colleagues in the Sister Services, has reviewed and enhanced security arrangements in an around Parliament and is satisfied that the security of Parliament in these times is assured”, the Commissioner noted.
