Searches of nightclubs are only being done based on intelligence gathering -Hicken

Commander of the Police Force A’ Division, Assistant Commissioner, Clifton Hicken, has clarified that the searches being carried out at nightclubs and nightspots in Georgetown are only being done based on intelligence gathering and the clubs are not being targeted otherwise.

Persons have been contacting the Police when they notice other club goers in the club with weapons and other illegal items.

In an interview with News Source on Wednesday, Mr. Hicken said he is well aware that regular searches could possible cripple the businesses and therefore the searches are only being done when the Police would have received intelligence of the possibility of illegal weapons or drugs in the night clubs.

He said the searches so far have uncovered three illegal firearms at two different nightspots as well as illegal drugs. Persons have been arrested and facing charges in connection with those busts.

“We do not want to punish the majority for the minority and we do not want to affect businesses either and that is why they were informed of the move beforehand and it is being done based on intelligence gathering”, the Commander explained.

He said the Police decided to start the operation based on the shooting incident at the Rio Nightclub in Queenstown.  A 19-year-old man was shot dead just outside the club as he sought cover from gunshots being fired by two other men.

News Source understands that video recordings taken from outside the nightclub on the night of that shooting, revealed a number of persons running out of the club with guns in their hands.

There have been other cases of gunplay inside and outside other nightspots.

The Police Force is hoping that the move would also encourage club owners to take their security seriously and ensure that the persons they hire to overlook security, pay attention to their jobs.
