Security to be tightened at border regions to block gun flow

Guyana’s security forces will be moving to tighten up on security especially in the bordering regions to stem the flow of illegal weapons into the country. Special attention will be given to the border with Brazil.

As gun crimes remain high, investigations have revealed that many of the guns being used are coming in from Brazil.

Brazil is one of the world largest manufacturers of small arms.

At his post-cabinet press briefing today, State Minister Joe Harmon said the National Security Committee has been meeting and focusing on the crime situation, especially gun crimes. He said the Police Force will begin putting certain systems in place to tackle the problem.

“Internally in the country, the Police operations are targeting areas that are recognised with high crime activity and they are taking steps to deal with that”, Harmon said.

The State Minister said he hopes that citizens will play their role and assist the Police with its operations as it moves to stem the spike in criminal activity.

The Guyana Police Force has already recorded over 30 gun crimes since the start of the new year.
