Serious crimes on the rise in Guyana
The Guyana Police Force on Friday revealed that serious crimes across the country are on the rise. In it’s monthly crime statistics report, the Police Force said there has been a 5% increase in serious crimes recorded at the end of October 2013 in comparison to the same period last year.
The report found that “the total number of reports of serious crimes made between January 01 and October 31, 2013 was 3350 compared to 3201 for the same period in 2012.”
Some of the offences monitored are murder, robbery under arms, robbery with violence, larceny from the person, break and enter and larceny, burglary, rape and kidnapping.
The Police report stated that a total of 108 murders were recorded at the end of October 2013 in comparison to 115 murders for the same period in 2012. That figure represents a 6% decrease in the number of murders when compared to the 2012 figures for the same period.
“Of the 108 murders this year, 47 were of the disorderly type, 20 were committed during armed robberies, 2 were execution type, and 16 were domestic related, while the other 23 are so far undetermined”, the report stated.
And at the end of October 2013, robbery under arms saw an overall increase by 7%, with 921 reports compared to 858 for the same period in 2012.
The statistics indicate an increase of 16% in the number of armed robberies involving the use of firearms and a 6% decrease in armed robberies where instruments other than firearms were used by the perpetrators.
The Police Force will on Monday unveil its Christmas Police plan as the busy shopping season approaches. Additional ranks are expected to be placed across the city in the  busy shopping areas.
