Service providers urged to “up” their game as Tourism month celebrations begin

Ahead of observances for Tourism Awareness Month, Business Minister Dominic Gaskin is urging operators across the sector to up their game in an effort to raise standards.

Tourism Awareness Month was launched on Tuesday and will be observed during the month of November under the theme: “Sustainable Tourism – a tool for development.”

Mr. Gaskin believes this presents the perfect opportunity for tourism stakeholders to achieve higher standards in a sector that is ripe with potential.

He said if Guyana is to attract large numbers of international tourists, it will require a certain level of service. “Up your game,” he said as he encouraged every citizen to use this month of activities to do just that.

Gaskin said there is a role to be played by each citizen, from the Immigration Officer to the Taxi Driver and Hotel Staff. He also announced that in order to achieve higher standards in the sector and encourage greater economic activity, the government will soon implement its National Tourism Policy.

He said along with changes that will take effect at the Guyana Tourism Authority in 2018, including the appointment of a new Director, the government intends to ensure that it articulates its strategies through the National Policy.

A draft of the policy is currently engaging the attention of Cabinet.

Once approved, it will be laid in the National Assembly. Minister Gaskin said in order for Guyana to build its tourism brand, it would require large financial resources and he now awaits allocation in the 2018 budget to move full steam ahead with targeted marketing strategy.
