Speaker of the National Assembly, Dr. Barton Scotland on Wednesday said he is in possession of several complaints of breaches of privileges submitted to him by Members of Parliament against their fellow Parliamentarians.
At the start of the sitting, Dr. Scotland thanked MPs for their submissions and said that the complaints may or may not warrant sanctions by him.
“The speaker intends to review and treat with all complaints”, he committed.
He reminded members that the rules of the House must be held in strict regard by all members. Those rules he said too must be treated with dignity and respect and are expected to be upheld by all members of the House.
Dr. Scotland used the opportunity to remind the House of instances during the 2016 budget when he was called out on social media by a junior member of the House. “That member was either unaware of his responsibility or acted in a reckless and careless regard,” he added.
The Speaker said too that he was not totally satisfied with the frequency at which the House was meeting.
Wednesday’s sitting comes eight weeks since the last time the House met. “I was pondering whether the frequency of meeting leave members satisfied,” The Speaker said as opposition MPs heckled their dissatisfaction. June 10, 2016 will mark one year for this 11th Parliament.
