Social Protection Minister warns against fleecing of pensioners

As the Social Protection Ministry gets ready for the distribution of pension books, the Social Protection Minister, Amna Ally is warning social workers against being caught up in any fraud or making any attempt to fleece pensioners.

A number of social workers were suspended following allegations of them attempting to defraud the system. Minister Ally said moving forward, she prefers that persons be dismissed when they attempt to defraud pensioners.

There have been many cases, especially in the outlying regions, of some social workers using up the public assistance books that were meant for the pensioners, and in some cases, some pensioners have were asked to give back some of the pension money.

The Minister said she will not tolerate any such behavior and will ensure criminal charges are filed in such cases.

She made the declaration yesterday as she addressed social workers attached to the ministry at a workshop which was hosted at the Police Training School auditorium, a stone’s throw away from the Criminal Investigations Department of the Force.
