17 hours after the close of polls on Monday, the Guyana Elections Commission has declared that enough Statements of Poll have not been processed to predict any tendency in the election.

GECOM’s Chairman Dr. Steve Surujbally said himself and other Commissions, including Vincent Alexander and Sase Gunraj, have so far gone through more than 1500 statements of polls and they are continuing to go through the statements. There are a total of 2299 statements of poll.

Despite this figure, the Chairman insists that it was not enough to declare any preliminary results but promised to release figures by 6pm tonight and later at 11pm.

The Commission had promised to have preliminary results released since 11pm last evening.

Surujbally who had promised the final results, at best, by Wednesday morning, said at aTuesday morning press conference that the Commission intends to follow the law in its tabulation with the aim being to declare the final results at the earliest possible time.

The GECOM Chairman asserted too that he intended to choose accuracy over the anticipation of the citizenry and begged for the highest level of patience to be exercised. “We will not work outside the ambit of the law… if it takes time the population must have patience.”

He also urged political parties who have been making pronouncements of a win to desist from such commentary. Dr. Surujbally said it was a dangerous game to play.

Meanwhile, GECOM Chief Elections Officer Kieth Lowenfiled said the Commission has received all the SOP’s from District 4 and the majority from Districts 5, 6, 2 and three with the expecting of those that has to come from riverain areas. District 4 has the largest number of voters.

He explained that all ballot boxes and GECOM material are safely within the Commission’s custody and hopes to overcome the geographical and weather related constraints by this evening and have all the SOP’s in hand from outlying regions to be verified by the Commission.

Lowenfield also made an appeal for Guyanese to exercise patience and discipline in waiting on the results.

So far there have been no major errors with the SOP’s that have arrived at GECOM Headquarters in Georgetown, both the Chairman and Commissioners have said.
