Toll at Mackenzie Wismar Bridge to be increased

The Government of Guyana on Wednesday announced that it has given the greenlight for an increase of the toll at the Mackenzie/Wismar Bridge in the mining town of Linden.

At his post cabinet press briefing, Cabinet Secretary Dr. Roger Luncheon also announced that the bridge will now fall under the Ministry of Works but the proceeds from the toll collection will go towards the Linden Mayor and Town Council and the  National Industrial and Commercial Investments Limited (NICIL).  The Interim Management Committee of the Mayor and Town Council will get 70% of the revenue collected while NICIL will be given the remaining 30%.

NICIL has always been involved in the operation of the bridge and is responsible for its repairs and maintenance.

The rate of increases has not been announced as yet.

The Mackenzie Wismar Bridge links the two shores of the Demerara River at Linden and also serves as the main link to many of the interior regions through the mining town of Linden.
