With just over five months before he reaches the age of retirement, Police Commissioner Seelall Persaud, who was expected back at work on Friday after a long period of accumulated leave, has now been directed to proceed on special leave.
The instruction was given by Minister of Public Security, Khemraj Ramjattan in a letter to the Police Commissioner. In the letter, Mr. Ramjattan told the Top Cop that he should remain on leave until further notice to allow the Force to continue pursuing innovations and initiatives by its temporary administration.
Persaud will reach the retirement age of 55 in April 2018. It is expected that he will remain on the “special leave” straight into his retirement.
Just a few weeks ago, State Minister, Joe Harmon confirmed that he has held meetings with the Police Commissioner to discuss his “welfare”.
The Police Commissioner came under heavy criticism earlier this year for the Force’s handling of an alleged assassination plot against the President. One of the accused persons in the plot is a friend of the Commissioner and a Commission of Inquiry into the alleged plot, heard that it was the Commissioner himself who had called the Police and gave instructions for his friend and the friend’s brother to be released from custody.
The Commission of Inquiry blasted the Police Commissioner for his interference and recommended that he be fired by the government.
