Traffic chaos forces hold on installation of East Coast arch until tonight

As motorists complained bitterly about being stuck in traffic for hours because of the installation of an independence arch along the East Coast of Demerara, a decision was taken this midday to put a hold on the installation of the arch until later tonight.

The Department of Public Information in a statement explained that a local company is funding the arch and “unfortunately the fabricator was late in delivering as the arch was to have been installed last weekend. The company has an event on Saturday, May 13th and is keen to have the arch installed for the event.”

The statement added that the Government of Guyana regrets the inconvenience caused to commuters this morning and wishes to assure the public that every effort will be made to minimize the disruptions to traffic as the arch is installed.

Notice about the arch being installed and the road closures, only went public last evening so many commuters found themselves surprised by the long traffic lines and traffic being diverted to alternative routes.

Some persons complained about missing  classes at the University and also being late for work.  Usually when major works are being done along the East Coast roadway, traffic would be diverted to the Railway embankment. However, a bridge is under reconstruction in that area at Lilliendaal, causing even more traffic chaos.

Several persons vented their frustrations on social media, saying that the timing was bad and the works should have been done at nights or on the weekend.
