Two PPP nominated Commissioners resign from GECOM; Robeson Benn and Bibi Shadick to serve as replacements

Two People’s Progressive Party nominated Commissioners of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) have resigned.

The two Commissioners are Mahamood Shaw and Athmaram Mangar. The resignations were confirmed by Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo on Tuesday.

He said that two names have already been submitted as replacements for the resigned members. He gave the reasons for the resignations as personal and he thanked them for the “enormous” labour they invested in representing the interest of all Guyanese at GECOM.

Former Public Works Minister, Robeson Benn and former PPP Member of Parliament Bibi Shadick have been nominated and submitted to replace the resigned members.

According to Jagdeo, he has already spoken to President David Granger and has asked that he swears in the new members at the soonest possible time.

The Opposition Leader said this is particularly important since the country is gearing itself for the holding of local government elections within the next few months. Sase Gunraj is the other PPP Commissioner at GECOM among a total of six Commissioners.
