US delivers 20 Guyanese born deportees on special flight

US Government agents on Tuesday accompanied 20 deportees on a special chartered flight to Guyana.

The aircraft with the 20 Guyanese nationals touched down at the Cheddi Jagan Airport just after 3:30pm and some of the men appeared in grey and white prison outfits as they disembarked the aircraft.

They were deported from the United States after serving time in prison for various offenses, including homicide, rape, possession of firearms, fraud, drug trafficking and robberies.

Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum told News Source on Tuesday afternoon that the men are being interviewed at the headquarters of the Criminal Investigation Department. Once those interviews would have been completed, they are expected to be released.

They will have to make regular visits to various police stations at specific times as part of a monitoring process.

Guyana has complained in the past about persons being deported after they would have left the country at a very young age.  Many deportees find themselves not being able to locate family members and would eventually have to do odd jobs to survive, even as others have chosen to live on the streets.

The US has been assisting with various reintegration programmes and the government is expected to get more of those programmes put in place.
