“VIP” Couple jailed 60 months and fined $57 Million over 40 pound cocaine bust

A Berbice man and woman were today slapped with a sentence of 60 months in jail each and fined a total of $57 Million after found guilty of attempting to traffic more than 40 pounds of cocaine through the Cheddi Jagan Airport.

The couple, 25-year-old Mahendra Ramsuchit and 29-year-old Robhina Basdeoram were both found guilty of the charges and sentenced today by Magistrate Judy Latchman.

It was back in 2015 that the two were charged after they attempted to ferry cocaine on to a New York bound flight using the VIP lounge at the Cheddi Jagan Airport.

Cocaine was found in the suitcases for the two Berbicians. The Customs Anti Narcotics Unit made the bust after an agent started to raise questions about the couple’s access to the VIP lounge.

A former Personal Assistant at the Ministry of Agriculture was charged with conspiracy because it was suspected that he provided documents for the couple to be granted access to the VIP lounge at the airport.  The case against him was dismissed today and he was joyous as he left the courtroom.

It was not the same for Ramsuchit and Basdeoram.  The woman sobbed openly in the courthouse as the sentence was handed down. She was pregnant at the time of the bust.

The two were whisked away today just after the judgement was handed down.
