The nation’s capital city saw a voter turn out of 28% at yesterday’s local government elections.
According to the Guyana Elections Commission, of the 119,000 eligible voters in the Georgetown municipality, just over 28,000 of them cast their ballots at Monday’s elections.
A Partnership for National Unity, which is mostly supported by the People’s National Congress, has picked up 21 seats on the 30 seat Georgetown City Council. The People’s Progressive Party has picked up 7 seats and the Alliance For Change will move into City Hall with 2 seats.
The PPP had just 2 seats on the Georgetown City Council following the 2016 Local Government Elections.
In total, the APNU pulled in 18,127 votes, the PPP won 7,050 and the AFC captured 3,059 votes.
In the first past the post phase of the elections, the APNU won 12 of the 15 Georgetown constituencies, with the PPP winning the remaining 3. In proportional representation, the APNU picked up 9 seats, the PPP picked up 4 seats and the AFC grabbed 2.
In all of the Constituencies across Georgetown, there was a low voter turnout.
Incumbent Mayor, Patricia Chase-Green was however the top vote getter overall. In her Constituency, she picked up more than 2200 votes. However, its not clear whether she will return to the Council and be elected as the Mayor.
The Mayor is elected from among the 30 Councillors. With the APNU holding a clear majority, it will likely hold on to both the Mayor and Deputy Mayor positions.
Party Executive and PNC Chairperson, Minister Volda Lawrence said not decision has been made yet on who the APNU Councilors intend to support for the Mayorship. She said all of the candidates moving into the Council are qualified for the post.
