Wedding Expo seeks to promote Guyana as ideal Wedding destination

Wedding tourism in Guyana continues to receive the push from Guyanese Businessman, Captain Gerry Gouveia, with the launch of the 8th consecutive Wedding Expo.

The event will be held from April 1 -3 at The Duke Lodge in Georgetown.

This year’s expo is being held under the theme “Magnificent Beginnings” and promises to return the same flare and explosion of colours, culture, music and religion.

The “Race to the Altar” reality show feature will also be retained. The winning couple of that race will be able to secure their wedding and all its expenses absolutely free.

The wedding will take place on the Saturday of Wedding Expo.

At Thursday’s launch, Captain Gouveia reminisced on how the expo’s ability to expand has been hampered greatly over the years by the absence of modern legislation.

However, commitments flowed in from the government for swift legislative amendments to outdated laws that continue to impede the revenue earner.

Like previous years, Mr. Gouveia criticized local legislation which requires that couples travel to Guyana two weeks in advance of their wedding in order for their marriage to satisfy all legal requirements.

However, he said he is happy to know that the coalition government had committed to amending those laws this year.

“Wedding Expo has been growing from strength to strength and continues to offer great support to small business to grow and maintain presence on the local market,” Gouveia said.

The launching ceremony also heard from Minister of Tourism, Cathy Hughes, who recognized the dynamism of the wedding expo and said it was something the Ministry will support as it also embraces wedding tourism in Guyana and seeks to market the country as a wedding destination.

Ms. Hughes said her commitment would be to seek amendments to the laws by the second quarter of 2016.

“Wedding Tourism holds huge potential and we are definitely happy to lend our support,” the Minister said.

Congratulations and well wishes also flowed in from the Private Sector Commission, the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Tourism and Hospital Association of Guyana.
