West Bank Bishop charged with alleged rape of church member

A man of God found himself before a the Chief Magistrate of Guyana facing a rape charge today.

Self proclaimed Bishop, Joseph Persaud, was granted bail in the sum of $350,000 after the charge of rape was read to him at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

Persaud, who heads a Church in La Parfaite Harmonie, on the West Bank of Demerara, allegedly shared a three year relationship with the accused, but the relationship reportedly ended when his wife found out.

However, the Court was told that after the relationship ended, Bishop Persaud wanted to reignite the flame and was accused of stalking the woman.

The victim claimed that the man eventually forced himself on her at his Diamond home, during a visit, when his wife was away.

Since the allegations surfaced, other women from the same church have come forward with claims of sexual advances made by the Bishop, during times when they sought guidance and counseling from him.

The matter has been adjourned until later this month.
