A twenty-year old woman who was recently turned down for a job with the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit found herself before the Chief Magistrate on Tuesday morning facing drug trafficking charges instituted by the same agency that she wanted to hire her.
The young woman Tishana Edwards who worked previously with a non-governmental human rights organisation was remanded to prison after she was charged with trying to traffic close to five pounds of cocaine out of Guyana in bottles of cream liqueur.
She pleaded not guilty to the drug trafficking charge and will make her next appearance on February 28, 2014.
According to the Prosecution, the mother of one was about to board a Fly Jamaica flight to New York on Sunday morning when security agents attached to the airport noticed strange objects in the bottles of cream liqueur that were in her luggage.
The CANU agents carried out a search and the objects tested positive to be cocaine. CANU and Police Narcotics Agents have been monitoring their checks of bags at the Cheddi Jagan airport as they notice an increase in the efforts to smuggle cocaine out of the country.
