Minister within the Ministry of Social Protection Volda Lawrence visited the displaced woman and committed to helping her, noting that she will work with the Ministry of Housing to see how best her housing needs could be accommodated at the shortest possible time.

The Ministry of Social Protection has rushed to the aid of  Berbice woman who lost all of her belongings in a fire over the weekend, leaving her and her 7 foster children homeless.

The woman, Gloria Downer, said she was at a nearby market and noticed black smoke coming from the area where she lived at no. 78 Village, Corriverton.

It is unclear how the fire started but no one was injured and the woman lost everything that she owned.

Her neighbour has stepped up to offer assistance.  At present Ms. Downer and her foster children are staying at a neighbour’s house.

She said her neighours have also been assisting her and children with food and clothing, but she needs support to procure supplies for the children to return to school and to provide a home for them.
