Woman’s body spotted at bottom of Kaieteur as new precautions take effect

The body of the 21-year-old woman who plunged to her death over the Kaieteur Falls, has been spotted at the bottom of the falls and Special Forces agents from the Guyana Defence Force are expected to head to the area and recover the body.

The Tourism Ministry in a statement last evening said a decision has now been taken to have limited access to certain sections of Kaieteur Falls.

Minister of Tourism, Cathy Hughes, had announced last Monday that this incident has forced authorities to come to the difficult decision to restrict visitors from the viewing ledge.

“This was a hard decision to make,” she said, pointing out that last Saturday’s incident has become a national issue that is being dealt with by a number of stakeholders. “Our young people are too valuable to lose them like this,” she stated.

The Government of Guyana and the Tourism Ministry have conveyed condolences to the grieving family and have collaborated with the Ministry of Human Services to deliver grief counseling services to the family.

The young girl worked with GPL in New Amsterdam and travelled to Georgetown from her Berbice home last Saturday to go on a tour of the falls.

Other persons who were on that trip said the young woman who was identified as Roshinee Pagwah, showed no signs of depression or anything being wrong during the trip. However, when the group was heading back to the aircraft, Pagwah made a dash and jumped off the edge of the falls.
