If Gold Rusts, What does Copper do?

If Gold Rusts, What does Copper do?

by Guest Writer Darren Jordan

It is such a shame that a citizen’s right to protest is being mocked by the Government for which that citizen works. Much like slavery, these citizens are being treated like mere workers without souls, families, dreams and hopes.
Instead, they are just figures in the way of a dream that is not shared, a vision that is blurred and a promise that is false. Racism, not even a decent excuse for the dismissal of the rights of Guyanese, cannot continue to be used as a reason or a way out. It is too irresponsible of the big brother government to allow our youth to grow up in a society where when things don’t go your way, you shout racism. I would love to highlight the positive things that the present government has done within the past 20 years.
I’d love to show you that my dislike for the current administration is not about race, it is about policy. It is about the fact that I do not think that you truly have the population’s best interest at heart when it comes to this and many other situations. Were you to take the bus to work Mr Minister in overcrowded and unregulated buses with blatant disregard for other road users, were you to fetch water Ms Minister, from a pipe that is at the bottom of your broken stairs, could you then see that the protest is coming from a place of pain, of suffering and of grave concern.
I am not saying that everyone will be able to live comfortably, not even for a long time but I would like to live in a country where that dream, that hope exists. I humbly ask you, please retract your statements implying that racism is the reason for which people are protesting and acknowledge these citizens, citizens with rights, with pride and with dignity, acknowledge their concerns of lack of security in their homeland. As holders of the same passport, we should not be fighting against each other but we should be fighting for each other.
Maybe hiring all Chinese workers (not the fault of the Chinese) was a mistake on your part. Were you to say, we didn’t think this through and we are sorry, we will set up a program at UG that allows Guyanese to be trained and ready in time for the opening of the hotel, I could live with that. Were you to say that provisions are being made for the suppliers of raw materials to the hotel e.g. sugar, rice, flour, supplies and repair work be done by Guyanese, I could accept that. But what I cannot stand for is you, the Gold of all of us, the Leaders, to rust by calling us racist for if Gold rusts, what does Copper do?
