Digicel continues to play its part in the development of sport in Guyana and on Wednesday, the company launched the eight edition of the Guyana Open Golf classic at the Lusignan Golf Club, East Coast Demerara.
The event which tees-off on Saturday and concludes on Sunday, is expected to feature a record number of 80 participants and  the club President Oncar  Ramroop is expected a large overseas contingent to attend the event since 25 of 57 registered players are foreign based.
Ramroop’s posited that the increased number of participants attending is due to the classic evolving over the years.

Commenting on the support of the Telecommunication giants over the years, Ramroop stated that “I consider them the epitome of what corporate  sponsors should, they continue to provide support for sports in Guyana.”
The club President further stated that this year,   Grand Coastal Hotel will be a co-sponsor of the event.
Meanwhile Digicel’s Head of Marketing Jacqueline James   encouraged all to attend the event and that her company continues to be committed to sport in Guyana.
“We remain committed to the development of youth and sports  in Guyana; we want our youths to get involved in a sporting activity and not just sit at home and watch,  It is a lovely atmosphere here  [ golf course] and we would like the everyone to come out and play”, James convened to the gathering.
According club Captain, Chatterpaul Deo, the format will be the same as last year, with the addition of the seniors which did not occur last year due to the lack of participants.
Deo explained that the men’s championship will adjudged by gross while the ladies by net.

Last year, Avinash Persaud and Shaunella Webster were the male and female champions respectively but Persaud is expected to face tough challenge from Jaipaul Suknanan while the female contingent from Suriname could pose a threat to Webster.

The green seems to be in great condition and the organisers are urging all participants to be fully hydrated due to the prevailing sunny weather conditions.

If the record number of participants is achieved, tee-off time will be this Saturday at 04:55 hrs in order to provide a finish at 17:30 hrs daily.
