The Georgetown leg of the Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ commenced in fine style on Monday evening at the National Cultural Centre Tarmac with Camp Street All-Star, a group of inmates at the Prison, stealing the show with a classic “road ball” display to progress to the group stages.
In fact for the first time, two teams from the Guyana Prisons Service will be involved, with the other being a composition of officers.
The display of the inmates in front of a partisan crowd signaled that they intend to have a long run at freedom in the tournament.
The Camp Street team secured a 3-1 win against a spirited Railway Kitty unit on the back of goals from Wendell Austin in the 15th, Dwayne Christopher (17th) and Steve Bacchus (27th); Shane Cooper was the scorer for the losers in the 25th.
Meanwhile, defending champions Sparta Boss were pushed to the limits as they won 3-1 on penalty kicks against Hardina Street.
The game was locked at 1-1 at full time. Jermin Scott scored for Hardina in the 21st minute while Sheldon Shepherd equalized for the champs in the 22nd.
In other results , Queen Street, Tigerbay defeated Fruit Stand 2-0 by virtue of a double by Deon Alfred in the 4th and 6th minutes.
A star-studded Bent Street team comprising several players from Alpha United, was given a solid work out by Holmes Street Tiger Bay in their 2-1 victory. Akeem Saul scored in the 4th minute to put the Holmes Street side ahead, which they comfortably carried into half time.
However, after the break the pressure of playing the formidable unit was telling with the team constantly losing ball possession only to eventually concede in the 23rd minute via a goal from Anthony Abrams.
With game poised to head to the spot line to determine the winner, Stellon David found the back of the net in the 28th minute and broke the hearts of the Tigber bay unit.
Similarly, Sheldon Profitt (7th) and Orandel Williams (14th) helped Leopold Street to a 2-0 win over South Ruimveldt.
Festival City crushed Norton Street Ballers 5-2, with Eon Allyene scoring in 16 seconds followed by another in the 5th minute; Cecil Williams (15th), Dwayne Lawrence (21st) and Daniel Favourite (24th) were the other marksmen. For the Norton Street team, Joshua Parvatan (20th) and Nigel Decamp (30th) were the men with goals.
In addition, Delon Williams goal in the 24th allowed Tucville to edge Island All-stars 1-0 while Channel-9 Warriors defeated Shopping Plaza 2-1; Kevein Barrow (2nd) and Joshua Fiffee (26th) netted for the Warriors while Stephen Dolphin scored for the opposition in the 6th minute.
The tournament continues on Thursday at Demerara Park with eight more knock out matches. Other venues for the matches include East Ruimveldt Community Square, Durban Park and the National Park.
Thirty-two teams will contest the first round which will be played on a knockout basis. The sixteen advancing teams will be placed into four groups, and will then play on a round-robin basis, with the top two teams advancing to the quarter-finals.
Over $1million in prize monies and trophies will be up for grabs with the winning team set to receive $500,000, runner-up $200,000, 3rd place $150,000 and 4th place $100,000.
