Suriname slows down Guyana’s march to CONCACAF Gold Cup

Guyana’s National Football team, the Golden Jaguars’ hopes of qualifying for the prestigious CONCACAF Gold Cup received a major setback as they lost to host Suriname on Saturday afternoon 3-2 in round three of the Scotiabank Men’s Caribbean Cup.

The Jaguars would have been brewing with confidence heading into the match, having not lost to the opponents in the last four encounters but a more focused Suriname team ensured that those fans in attendance at the André Kamperveen went away in a joyful mood.

The match could not have started any better for the visitors as forward Marcel Barrington hit the back of the net in the 5th minute, a momentum in which the team carried until half time. However, upon resumption, the home team looked extremely rejuvenated as the Mitchelle Kissor found the steely equalizer in the 51st.

The battled with the two arch rivals continued to ensue but none could find the precious goal to break the deadlock and with no drawn result possible, the game went into extra time after full time saw the scores locked 1-1

Extra time commenced   and the home side were forcing the pace of the ball immediately and their pressure eventually paid virtue, as it brought a lapse in defending where mid-fielder Galgyto Talea steered the ball into an empty goal in the 103rd

Six minutes later, Ivanildo Rozenblad increased the lead for the Surinamese and essentially sealed the match for the home side.

The final minutes of the match were approaching and with the Jaguars press to find two goals to carry the match into penalties, goal keeper Kai McKenzie-Lyle (90+16) scored in the 116th , to give some consolidation for their efforts.

The Golden Jaguars will now return home to face Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz on Tuesday at the Leonora Stadium from 20:00 hrs.

Guyana has never beaten Jamaica in their last three encounters but will certainly need a change in fortunes if   they seek to keep any hopes alive of progressing in the tournament.

Golden Jaguars starting XI for the match read: Kai McKenzie-Lyle (GK), Walter Moore, Colin Nelson, Jake Newton, Quincy Adams, Brandon Beresford, Samuel Cox, Trayon Bobb, Dwight Peters, Vurlon Mills, and Marcel Barrington
