OAS and Commonwealth to send assessment teams for elections

The Organization of American States (OAS) and the Commonwealth will field independent assessment missions to Guyana in the coming days to carry out an electoral assessment as the country gears itself for regional and general elections on May 11.

The assessments follow two identical ones that were conducted just over two weeks ago by the Carter Center and the United Nations.

Guyana is currently awaiting responses from the Carter Center and the UN on whether they will send observer missions to overlook the May 11 elections.

Head of the Presidential Secretariat Dr. Roger Luncheon told reporters that the administration is also awaiting responses from other international organizations and countries that have been invited.

The Guyana Government is anticipating a heavy presence of international observer missions for the elections with letters of invitation already dispatched to the governments of Indian and South Africa and several other international bodies that have participated in past elections.

Luncheon had said that the administration was interested in having those international observer missions present in Guyana as early as Nomination Day on April 7.

However, those invited are still to respond.

The government has no doubt that many of the international organizations that have participated in the past will be present in Guyana for the upcoming polls.

The Presidential invitations to the international community were sent following the dissolution of Parliament on February 28 and followed letters of notification which were dispatched early in January.

Already. the United States Embassy has indicated its intention to support the OAS mission in Guyana along with other local groups.

Luncheon made no mention of the local groups that are to be accredited to officially observe the 2015 elections.
