30 years in jail for man who murdered baby by setting house ablaze

A 24-year-old Kaneville, East Bank Demerara resident was sentenced to 30 years in jail for killing an eight-month-old boy in a fire that was deliberately set.

Justice Sandil Kissoon imposed the sentence on 24-year-old Nigel Dodson on Wednesday after he was found guilty of the crime by a 12-member jury.

Throughout the trial, Dodson who was represented by Attorney Adrian Thompson denied the charge that on the 23rd January 2017 at Kaneville, he murdered Romain Seth by setting a house on fire.

“I still want to know why I deh in jail?” the convicted killer questioned in Court.

In handing down the sentence, Justice Kissoon noted that the act was done having no regard for the value of human life. The Judge ordered that Dodson only becomes eligible for parole after serving a minimum of 25 years in jail.

The Prosecution said the man never showed any remorse for his crime.

According to reports, Dodson set fire to the house after reportedly misplacing a firearm. The young baby was in the house at the time and died in the flames.
