Armed robberies up by 25%

The Guyana Police Force is stepping up patrols across the country as it has recorded a 25% increased in armed robberies despite the coronavirus pandemic.

Home Affairs Minister Robeson Benn made the grim announcement today as he defended the government’s purchase of 15 new motorcycles to assist the Police Force in its patrols.

The motorcycles, which were procured at a cost of over $6.5 million, have already been dispatched, with the majority of them in the Region 4 area.

The Home Affairs Minister was grilled on the procurement procedure for the motorcycles and has promised to provide additional details.

While armed robberies and cases of murders have seen significant increases when compared to the previous year, the Police Force maintains that serious crimes in total have seen a reduction.
