A Cuban National was today remanded to jail after he was charged with forging a US Embassy appointment letter and overstaying his time in Guyana.
52-year-old Lazaro Perreria Alanzo, appeared before Principal Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus and said he was tricked.
Speaking through an interpreter, the man denied the allegations.
The Court learnt that on the 17th December, in Georgetown, the accused uttered a forged US Visa appointment letter to a clerk at the Department of Citizenship in an effort to get his time in Guyana extended. The Prosecutor said he knowingly conspired with others to get the document forged and use it as a way to get an extension in his stay in the country.
Despite his pleas for leniency and claims of being tricked into obtaining the forged document, the Cuban national was remanded to jail until later this month, when the matter will come up again.
Scores of Cubans come to Guyana daily to trade in goods and to apply for US visas. Guyana is the US visa centre country for Cuba.
