Gary Best charged and granted $500,000 bail for causing death by dangerous driving

Former Chief of Staff of the Guyana Defense Force, retired Rear Admiral Gary Best was today charged for allegedly causing the death of cyclist Jude Bentley by dangerous driving and allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol.

Best appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court alongside his Attorney Nigel Hughes. He was not required to enter a plea to the charge of causing death.

He was granted bail in the sum of $500,000 and ordered to return to Court on the 17th March, 2020.

According to the police charge sheet, on the 8th February at Clive Lloyd Drive, Best drove motorcar PRR 8128 in a manner dangerous to the public causing the death of Bentley. 

The Police Prosecutor objected to bail because of the seriousness of the charge.

However, Attorney Nigel Hughes who is representing Mr. Best said he can vouch for his client that he is no flight risk and has been a man of distinction throughout his life and military career.

The Magistrate granted bail. Best was led away from the courtroom in handcuffs to the waiting area for his bail to be paid.

He also appeared in a separate courtroom to answer the charge of driving under the influence of alcohol. He was granted self bail in that matter.
