Permanent Secretary on $100,000 bail for corrupt transaction

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs, Sharon Hicks, appeared in Court this morning where she faced a charge of being involved in a corrupt transaction.

Hicks appeared before the Chief Magistrate. She was granted $100,000 bail and told to return to Court on the 20th January for the continuation of the case. She was represented by Attorney Sase Gunraj.

It is alleged that the senior Government Officer was involved in a corrupt transaction when she allegedly collected sums of money from a contractor who won a security contract at the Ministry she managed.

She was first arrested back in October after the contractor filed a report and the Police carried out a sting operation. That operation, according to the Police, saw a quantity of marked money being sent to the Permanent Secretary’s office as part of the money she allegedly demanded from the contractor.

Hicks was arrested and has not said anything publicly on the issue. She is currently on administrative leave from her job and is expected to remain off the job for the duration of the case.
