Prisoner recaptured hours after escape from Lusignan

A prisoner who is serving two five-year sentences for robbery under arms escaped from the Lusignan prison this morning but was recaptured within a few hours.

The 20-year-old prisoner, Shamar Prince, was working on the prison farm this morning and escaped through the eastern gate in the prison compound as a truck was entering the area.

The prisoner made his way into the backlands, but an alarm was immediately raised by the prison authorities and the Police Force was contacted.

Ranks from the Vigilance Police station responded immediately and managed to recapture the suspect in the same backlands. He was escorted to the Vigilance Police station where he was told of the offence of escape from lawful custody and questioned.

He was later handed over to the Lusignan Prison. He is expected in Court soon to face the escape from lawful custody charge.

Prince was convicted of robbery charges earlier this year and sentenced to five years in jail.

This was the second escape from the Lusignan jail over the past three weeks.
