Ten more persons in Guyana have lost their lives to COVID-19, taking the death toll in the past three weeks to 93. It is the second-highest number of deaths to be recorded within a month since the virus was first recorded in Guyana.

The other three deaths were recorded in Regions 2, 3, and 7.

The country’s death toll now stands at 1,148.

The Ministry of Health has also recorded a total of 742 new cases of the virus in the past 24hrs. There are now more than 12,500 active cases in the country.

Every region is reporting new cases.

Since the start of January, more than 18,000 new cases of COVID-19 have been recorded. The Ministry of Health has been beefing up its facilities to deal with an increase in hospitalizations. But there has been no dramatic increase in people needing hospital care, according to the Health Minister who continues to insist on persons to follow the COVID-19 guidelines.

The Ministry of Health recently announced a decision to cut back on PCR testing at government facilities. Persons seeking PCR tests will now have to visit private health institutions and pay for those tests.
