Guyana appears to be experiencing a surge in COVID 19 cases especially in the Region One and Region Seven communities.

The Public Health Ministry reported today that the country has recorded 10 new cases of the coronavirus within the past 24 hours, taking the total number of active cases to 119.

The total number of recoveries remains at 114.

The situation continues to cause a headache for Health Officials who believe that as citizens continue to flout the health and safety guidelines, the numbers will continue to rise.

“I wish to reiterate that we are a long way from returning to normal as a result of the continuous spread of this disease. I must draw your attention to what I mean by this. With this disease being embedded in some of our hardest to reach areas in the hinterland region, and even along the coast-land, the behavior pattern which is a part of our culture that you choose not to change, continues to be the platform that is fueling the transmission”, Dr. Persaud said.

The increase in the numbers come as the country is beginning a gradual reopening with the Airports to begin their phased opening from tomorrow.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Public Health is hoping to open the doors to the Infectious Diseases Hospital soon. Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Shamdeo Persaud who had a tour of the site on Monday explained that the hospital will have all the facilities to isolate persons affected by COVID-19.

Guyana recorded its first case of the coronavirus back in March and the numbers have been climbing since then.
