The Ministry of Public Infrastructure has announced that it will be moving to have several sections of the access roads to Diamond and Mocha on the East Bank of Demerara outfitted with street lights.

The moves in wake of a number of accidents on the two main roadways at night.

Just two days ago, a young motorcyclist lost his life when he collided with a horse while riding home.

The Ministry said that the two areas have experienced rapid development since their creations, thus leading to increased traffic and ultimately a greater likelihood of accidents.

“It is necessary that the infrastructure in these communities reflect their growth. Therefore, the Ministry of Public Infrastructure has taken the initiative to have sections of these access roads lit and is accelerating its planned installation of streetlights. This project will see the installation of 100 streetlights in the two communities and is expected to improve the safety and security”, a statement from the Ministry said.

Residents from both communities have long complained about the two main access roads that had no street lights. They said their complaints fell on deaf ears during the last government, although massive housing schemes were developed in the two areas.

Works on the installation are to begin soon.
