One man was taken into custody on Friday afternoon after a large quantity of guns and ammunition were discovered in a barrel that was addressed to him.

The discovery was made by customs officers attached to the Guyana Revenue Authority just before 12 noon on Friday at the GNIC wharf on Lombard Street.

A senior law enforcement officer confirmed that at least 15 pistols along with 2 high powered ak-47 rifles and over 100 rounds of ammunition were found in the barrel at the city wharf.

According to a police release, “At about 1130h. today Friday May 08, 2015, during the clearing of a cargo consignment at the GNIC Wharf by GRA Officials a cache of arms and ammunition was found comprising two (2) AK 47 Rifles, four (4) 40 pistols, eleven (11) 9mm. pistols, fifteen (15) extra magazines for the firearms, 489 various caliber rounds for the firearms and a body protection vest.”

The barrel arrived from the United States.

Usually barrels and small packages would not be fully examined by customs officers and persons would just give an indication of what would be in the shipment and fees would be attached for them to pay for clearance.

But sources close to the GRA indicate that officers decided to check the barrel’s contents and discovered the large cache of weapons.

A full investigation has been launched.
