$150,000 Bail for GGMC Prosecutor nabbed in bribery sting

A Guyana Geology and Mines Commission Prosecutor who was nabbed by the Police during a sting operation for allegedly accepting a bribe, found himself before a City Magistrate facing charges today.

The GGMC Prosecutor, Sherwin Crandon, was charged for corrupt transaction by an agent. He was granted bail in the sum of $150,000.

The Court was told that on the 19th May at Seeta’s Bar in Kitty, Crandon corruptly obtained $300,000 from Viveka Singh as an inducement for dropping illegal mining charges that Singh was facing in the Courts.

The GGMC Prosecutor was responsible for the prosecution of the matter.

The alleged victim, Viveka Singh had complained to the Police that the Prosecutor was demanding the sum of money from him so that the illegal mining charges be dropped.

The Police set up a sting operation and moved in and arrested the GGMC Prosecutor moments after he received the money.

At the time of his arrest, Crandon claimed that the money was not for the dropping of any criminal matter, but rather it was a loan he obtained from the miner that he was prosecuting.

The matter will return to the Courtroom in the new month.
