154 murders in 2013, most remain unsolved

The Guyana Police Force is reporting this morning that 2013 saw a 7% increase in serious crimes in Guyana.

According to the Police Public Relations office, Guyana recorded 154 murders in 2013 which marks an 11 percent increase over the previous year. 61 of those murders were of the disorderly type, 24 were committed during armed robberies, 4 were execution type, and 24 were domestic related, while the other 41 are undetermined. 2013 also saw a 7% increase in armed robberies over the previous year.

“At the end of December 2013 robbery under arms overall has increased by 7%, with 1,132 reports compared to 1,058 for the same period in 2012. The statistics indicate an increase of 14% in the number of armed robberies involving the use of firearms; and a 4% decrease in armed robberies where instruments other than firearms were used by the perpetrators”, the Police statement said.

Most of the murder cases remain unsolved mysteries. The year also saw a spike in the murder rate in the mining community and that triggered a call by miners for security to be improved in the mining areas.

Minister of Home Affairs Clement Rohee has said that there is no security crisis in Guyana. The Opposition parties continue to roast Rohee over his leadership at the Home Affairs Ministry and they continue to call for his resignation.

The Guyana Police Force is expected to benefit significantly from training this year and by July of this year a swat team is expected to be in place to take on serious crime situations.
