16-year old miner killed in pit accident

The Gold rush in Guyana has claimed yet another life even as there are calls from interest groups for stricter safety practices in the  mining community.

A 16-year-old young man working in a mining pit at Pamela in the Mahdia mining community in Region 8, lost his life when the mining pit he was working in, caved and buried him alive.

The dead youth has been identified as Dennis Anthony Barker.

Another young man, 20-year-old Scotland Pluck also got buried in the cave but was luckily pulled out alive and rushed to the hospital.

The teenager who died hailed from the East Ruimveldt community in Georgetown according to a Police report. He was eventually pulled from the pit but was pronounced dead on arrival at the Mahdia Hospital.

Over 20 persons have died in mining pit accidents in the gold mining areas in Guyana over the past 4 years.

The Guyana Geology and Mines Commission has been trying to carry out stricter mining practices. However, with more persons getting involved in the industry, adequate monitoring appears to be a big problem especially with an increase in illegal mining activities.
