18 persons in COVID ICU as cases and deaths continue to climb

The COVID-19 death toll in Guyana climbed by one on Saturday as 37 new cases were recorded.

The latest casualty has only been identified as a 74-year-old woman from Region Four. Her death has taken the total number of Coronavirus fatalities in the country to 86.

According to the latest dashboard from the Ministry of Health, there are currently 18 persons in the Coronavirus Intensive Care Unit.

Guyana’s total COVID-19 cases passed the 3000 mark on Saturday. There are currently 995 active cases of the virus in Guyana with 851 of those persons in home isolation. The remaining cases are in institutional isolation.

Former Health Minister Volda Lawrence recently said she believes the high number of persons in home isolation is responsible for the rapid spread of the disease.

She reminded that under her watch, every positive COVID-19 case was placed in institutional care until they were cleared of the virus. That policy was discontinued after the government changed in August, and only cases with severe symptoms are now hospitalised.
