Investigations have been launched by the Police into the shooting death of a 21-year-old Land of Canaan man, Seon Clarke.

Clarke was shot dead and his friend was badly beaten by a group of residents from the Pearl community late on Saturday night.

According to a Police statement, earlier in the day, the two young men were in a grocery store at Johanna on the East Bank of Demerara, when the owner of the store summoned Police officers because he believed the two young men were acting suspiciously.

When the Police arrived, the two young men ran away from the scene and into some nearby bushes. According to the Police, two loud explosions were heard at the time but the young men were not seen again.

Later on Saturday night, the same two young men were reportedly spotted walking along the Public road at Pearl. They were surrounded and accosted by a group of residents and during that standoff, Clarke was shot to the body by one of the residents.

His friend was badly beaten and then the Police were called, according to the statement.

The Police report added that “the men were handed over to the police, who rushed them to the Diamond Public Hospital, where Clarke was pronounced dead on arrival, whilst his accomplice was treated and sent away. He has since been taken into police custody and is assisting with the investigation.”

It is unclear whether the resident who shot the young man dead has been identified and arrested.
