24 year old shot dead during argument

The Guyana Police Force has launched an investigation into the shooting death of a 24-year-old young man who was killed on Friday evening during an argument at Mandela Avenue, Georgetown.

The dead man has been identified as Elvis Fernandes of Mandela Avenue, West Ruimveldt, Georgetown.

According to the Police Public Relations Office, initial investigations have revealed that the driver of a mini-bus and the driver of a motor car were involved in an argument earlier in the day at Mandela Avenue because of an accident involving the two motor vehicles.
On Friday evening, the two drivers “crossed paths again along Mandela Avenue as the mini-bus stopped to put off a passenger and another argument arose. On this occasion Elvis Fernandes and a plain clothes policeman were in the motor car.”
The Police statement said Elvis Fernandes became involved in the argument along with the driver of the motor car during which he was shot to his chest by a man who was a passenger in the mini-bus and who had begun discharging rounds from a firearm.
The Police said the policeman who was making efforts to pacify the situation responded and discharged a round from his service firearm which struck the armed man.
The armed man, however, re-entered the mini-bus and was taken to the GPHC by the driver. He has been identified as 20-year-old Lloyd Britton of Beterverwagting, ECD, and has been admitted a patient under guard at the GPHC.
Elvis Fernandes was pronounced DOA at the GPHC. Family members of the dead man appeared confused as they gathered at the Georgetown hospital to try to get an understanding of what really happened. The young man’s mother said she could not understand what had taken place and she would like answers.
Questions were also raised about the role of the policeman in the entire incident.
