The Ministry of Health today announced that the country has recorded 125 new cases of coronavirus within the past 24 hours. The latest report takes the number of new cases recorded since the start of June to 2,407.

Two additional deaths were also recorded in the past 24 hours and that takes the number of deaths recorded so far for this month to 56.

As the Health Ministry continues to focus on its national vaccination programme, it appears as though less attention is being given to the enforcement of preventative measures.

There is now growing concern about the communities in Region 9 which borders Brazil seeing a steep rise in new cases.

According to the Ministry of Health, Region 9 currently has more than 350 active cases. While the border crossing between Guyana and Brazil has been officially closed for months, citizens from both sides have been making their way across to neighbouring communities.

Some villages in the Rupununi region have now instituted additional COVID curfew measures of their own to stem the spread of the virus.

Region 4 continues to be the region with the most active COVID-19 cases and recorded deaths. Several wards in the city and along the East Bank of Demerara have been declared COVID hotspot areas.
