Police Commissioner (ag) Nigel Hoppie has reported that while the country has seen a 4.3% decrease in serious crimes, the murder rate has seen a significant increase of 27.69%.

Between the 1st January and the 7th December 2020, the country recorded 141 murders. The majority of the murders have been described as the disorderly type.

More than 70% of the murders have been solved, but there is still concern about the increase in cases of murder.

The Police Commissioner made the statements today as he awarded several Police officers for their outstanding work in the past year.

It was also reported that since January, more than 1500 pounds of marijuana has been seized with 418 persons appearing before the Courts on trafficking charges.

More than 30 fields of marijuana representing 314 acres were destroyed in the past year. The destruction, according to the Police, resulted in an average of over one million pounds of marijuana being kept off the streets.

The Police Force also seized more than 1000 pounds of cocaine in the last 11 months. A total of 39 persons are facing the Courts on cocaine trafficking charges.

Police Commissioner Hoppie also indicated today that the Police Force has been working closely with various government agencies in the efforts to stamp out cases of domestic violence.

He reminded that a 914 hotline has been set up to address domestic violence emergencies.

The Top Cop has urged his Police Officers to always be professional when handling cases of domestic violence.
