A 29-year-old woman from Wismar, Linden is among the new confirmed cases of the coronavirus in Guyana. She is the second person from the town to test positive for the disease.

In a statement, the Regional Health and Emergency Committee of Region Ten confirmed the positive test result.

The woman is now a patient at the Diamond Hospital.

Medical Superintendent of the Linden Hospital Complex, Dr Joseph London said the woman had displayed mild symptoms as she had complained of sore throat, fever and cough during a visit to the hospital last week.

She was treated and sent home to do home isolation.

It was pointed out that after the hospital recognized that the woman hails from the same area where the first case was identified, she was subjected to a test.

“After the hospital took the samples off her we advised her that she should go on home isolation as we await the results of the tests. The results returned showing that she was positive and as such, the results were handed over to the Region and Task Force,” the official said.

She was transferred to the Diamond Hospital last evening.

Residents of the town are being encouraged to practice physical distancing and avoid social gatherings. The health official said they should also pay attention the guidelines from health officials. As of Monday, Guyana has confirmed 47 cases of the coronavirus disease.
