4 years in jail and $27.6M fine for Berbice man busted with over 100 lbs marijuana

The West Berbice man who was nabbed with over 100 pounds of marijuana  was today sentenced to 4 years in jail and fined $27.6 million after pleading guilty to the drug trafficking charge.

37-year-old, Jairam Lallman appeared in the Courtroom of the Chief Magistrate this morning and opted to enter a guilty plea.

The Court was told that on the 2nd December at Mandela Avenue, Lallman was nabbed with the over 100 pounds of compressed marijuana in the trunk of his car.

The bust was made by the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit.

The man initially claimed that he borrowed the car from someone else without knowing what was stored in the trunk. That explanation did not find favour with the investigators, who went ahead and filed the charges.

Before the sentence was handed down, the man’s Attorney asked that the Court be lenient.

That leniency came in the form of a 4-year jail sentence and that $27.6 million fine.
